Reduced Sampling Schedules for Calculation of an Insulin Sensitivity Index from the Liquid Meal Tolerance Test

Abstract

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Matsuda index of insulin sensitivity (MISI) calculated using reduced sampling schedules. Methods: Relationships between MISI values from a Liquid Meal Tolerance Test (LMTT) and
insulin sensitivity (SI) derived from an intravenous glucose tolerance test were assessed in 24 overweight/obese subjects (67% women) without diabetes. Results: Significant correlations were found between SI and 1) MISI calculated from 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min (r=0.776, p<0.0001); 2) MISI calculated from 0, 60, and 120 min (r=0.815, p<0.0001); and 3) MISI calculated from and 0 and 120 min (r=0.848, p<0.0001). Conclusion: MISI from LMTTs calculated using reduced sampling schedules (0, 60, 120 min or 0, 120 min) may be useful, lower cost options for assessment of insulin sensitivity in population studies and large clinical trials.
