Aim & Scope

Sports and Exercise Medicine (SEM) is dedicated to the open dissemination and rigorous discussion of research spanning sports medicine, exercise physiology, and applied performance science, consistent with the journal's Publication Ethics commitment to scientifically sound, clinically relevant scholarship.

Core Subject Areas

SEM welcomes original research, reviews, and case reports covering:

  • Athletic performance and its physiological and neurological determinants
  • Sports injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation
  • Exercise physiology and cardio-respiratory response to training
  • Strength and conditioning methodology
  • Anthropometric and biomechanical assessment in athletic populations
  • Exercise-based interventions for general health and working populations
  • Sports psychology and performance-related placebo and control mechanisms
  • Youth and recreational sport-specific research

Who Should Submit

The journal welcomes contributions from sports medicine physicians, exercise physiologists, athletic trainers, physiotherapists, researchers, coaches, and trainees engaged in sports and exercise-related research and clinical care, consistent with the manuscript types described in the Author Guidelines.

Scope of Contributions

SEM accepts a broad range of article types — original research, review articles, case reports, mini reviews, editorials, short communications, and letters to the editor — provided each submission falls genuinely within the subject areas above and meets the journal's standards for scientific rigor, as evaluated through the Peer Review Process.

What Falls Outside Our Scope

Manuscripts addressing general orthopedic surgical technique without a substantive sports medicine or exercise-performance focus are generally better suited to a dedicated orthopedics journal, and authors are encouraged to consider journal fit carefully before submission.
