Author Guidelines

These guidelines outline the requirements for preparing and submitting a manuscript to Surgical Research (SR). Manuscripts that do not conform to these guidelines may be returned to the author prior to entering the Peer Review Process.

General Formatting Requirements

  • Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format
  • Use a standard, legible font (such as Times New Roman, 12-point) with double line spacing throughout
  • Include continuous line numbering and page numbers to facilitate the review process
  • All measurements should be expressed in SI units

Manuscript Structure

A typical original research article should include the following sections, in order:

  1. Title Page — full manuscript title, author names, institutional affiliations, and a designated corresponding author with complete contact information
  2. Abstract — a concise, structured summary (typically 250–300 words) outlining the study's background, objectives, methods, results, and conclusions
  3. Keywords — 4–6 keywords to support indexing and discoverability (see Indexing and Abstracting)
  4. Introduction — background and rationale for the study, including relevant prior literature
  5. Materials and Methods — sufficient detail to allow replication of the study, including surgical technique description where applicable and a statement of ethical approval (see Ethical Approvals & Human/Animal Rights)
  6. Results — clear presentation of findings, supported by appropriate tables, figures, and intraoperative or radiographic images
  7. Discussion — interpretation of results in the context of existing literature, including study limitations
  8. Conclusion — a brief summary of the study's key findings and implications
  9. Acknowledgments — including disclosure of funding sources
  10. Conflict of Interest Statement — as required under the journal's Conflict of Interest Policy
  11. References — formatted per the journal's Citation Policy

Figures, Tables, and Imaging

Figures should be submitted as high-resolution files (minimum 300 dpi) in an appropriate format (TIFF, JPEG, or EPS). Intraoperative and radiographic images must be de-identified and accompanied by documented patient consent where applicable (see Ethical Approvals & Human/Animal Rights). Tables should be created using the table function in Word, not as embedded images. All figures and tables must be cited in the text and numbered sequentially, with clear, self-explanatory captions.

Reference Style

SR follows a numbered citation style. References should be listed in the order they first appear in the text, numbered sequentially, and formatted according to standard biomedical citation conventions, consistent with the ICMJE recommended reference format.

Case Reports

Case reports must include documentation confirming that patient consent for publication was obtained, particularly where identifiable clinical images, radiographs, or patient information are included.

Language

Manuscripts must be submitted in clear, grammatically correct English, consistent with the journal's English Language Editing Policy.

Generative AI Disclosure

Any use of generative AI tools in preparing the manuscript must be disclosed in accordance with the journal's GenAI Policy.

Submission Checklist

Before submitting, authors should confirm that: the manuscript adheres to the journal's Aim & Scope; all authors have approved the final version; conflicts of interest and funding sources, including any device manufacturer relationships, are disclosed; ethical approval and consent documentation is available where applicable; and all references are complete and correctly formatted.
