Rights and Permissions
This describes how to request permissions for uses of Anesthesiology (AOJ) content that fall outside what is already permitted under the journal's standard licensing terms.
What's Already Permitted Without Requesting Permission
Because all AOJ articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), most reuse — including copying, redistributing, and adapting content, even for commercial purposes — is already permitted without contacting the journal, provided appropriate attribution is given (see Copyright & Licensing). In the vast majority of cases, no formal permission request is necessary.
When You Should Still Contact Us
A formal request to the editorial office is appropriate where:
- You wish to reuse third-party material embedded within an AOJ article (such as an intraoperative image the original authors reproduced from another source under separate copyright) — in this case, permission must be sought from the original rights holder, not AOJ
- You are seeking a translation of a published article into another language for formal redistribution
- You represent an institution, medical education platform, or organization seeking written confirmation of licensing terms for internal compliance purposes
- You have a use case not clearly covered by the standard CC BY 4.0 terms and would like clarification
How to Request
Requests should be submitted to the editorial office, specifying the article (including its DOI), the intended use, and the specific clarification or permission being requested.
Third-Party Content Within AOJ Articles
Where an AOJ article itself contains material reproduced from another copyrighted source, this is indicated within the article, and reuse of that specific material requires permission from the original rights holder — not from AOJ or Openventio Publishers, consistent with the Author Guidelines requirement that authors secure such permissions prior to submission.
